There’s an exciting story unfolding at the gallery, and it’s one that shows exactly why local support matters.
The gallery is currently trying to raise funds to acquire Thomas Gainsborough’s portrait of local landowner and politician Henry Christopher Wise.
The portrait had been missing since 1949 and was only recently rediscovered. Since then, it has been the subject of fascinating research and conservation work. Conservator Stewart Meese examined the paint surface using UV light, revealing areas of over-painting and restoration.
And then came the really exciting news…
The painting has been authenticated as a genuine Gainsborough by Hugh Belsey, the internationally recognised authority on the artist.
So this newly rediscovered work of art is by one of Britain’s most celebrated artists, and is connected directly to our local history. There’s now a chance that it could become part of the permanent collection!
The gallery says:
“We are submitting applications for funding to support the acquisition of Thomas Gainsborough’s portrait of local landowner Henry Wise and relying on a pledge of support from FLAG as evidence of local support to make our case”
